The BC Oyster Guide Mobile App

BCSGA Releases Oyster App available on the Apple App Store and the Android Market

A directory of BC flavours, events and resources at Oyster Lovers fingertips, now available as free download for iOS and Android devices

Comox, BC – May 2, 2014 – Available today, the BC Oyster Guide mobile app is an extensive directory of BC oyster varieties, dining venues and shellfish events. This free app is designed as a resource for those who love local food, curious restaurant diners, chefs, tourists and food retailers.

Known as Canada’s Oyster Capital, British Columbia shellfish growers produce a world class product in demand internationally. The BC Oyster Guide website and mobile app provides a growing list of more than 30 BC oysters, identifying them by name, appearance, flavour profile, how they are grown, and origin. It even comes with a glossary of tasting terms and farming techniques. App users can explore and learn about the qualities that distinguish the many varieties of this abundant and sustainable local food, as well as where to find them at a list of restaurants and events in British Columbia that feature oysters, shellfish and seafood.

The new app and accompanying website at BCOysterGuide.com were created by the BC Shellfish Growers Association as a fun way to bring more awareness to the vast offerings of its membership. Shellfish aquaculture in British Columbia is a $37 million annual industry that is environmentally sustainable, providing 1,000+ full-time year-around jobs in BC, with room for growth. A great deal of the harvest is exported to the United States and world wide. With BC consumers driving a trend for local and sustainable food sources, the BCSGA sees an opportunity to increase its market share in its own province.

The project was created with the participation of the shellfish growers and with funding support from the BC Government’s Buy Local Program; delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC with funding from the BC Ministry of Agriculture.

Roberta Stevenson, Executive Director, BCSGA says “People are seeking to eat food that is local, sustainable, healthy. Oysters, are abundantly available throughout coastal BC, and are an excellent way to add fresh and local to your menu! British Columbia’s pristine, nutrient rich marine environment provides the perfect conditions to grow the worlds best oyster. ”

The BC Oyster Guide celebrated it’s official launch at “Wine for Waves” on May 2, 2014. Hosted by OceanWise and Chef Ned Bell/YEW Seafood + Bar, representatives from Fanny Bay Oysters, Sawmill Bay Shellfish and Okeover Organic Oysters talked about BC Shellfish while shucking for a crowd of 350 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Vancouver, and guests were able to download the app to their phones while at the event. The BC Oyster Guide will continue to make appearances at events and festivals throughout the summer.

The BC Oyster Guide is a free app available from the Apple Store and Google Play. Please visit www.BCOysterGuide.com for more information and links to download. The app will be continuously updated with new oyster products, restaurants, retailers, recipes and events.

The British Columbia Shellfish Grower’s Association (BCSGA) has been the voice of the shellfish industry since 1948. The non profit association represents BC shellfish industry growers, suppliers and service providers.

This project is supported by the BC Government’s Buy Local Program; delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC with funding from the BC Ministry of Agriculture.
